"The natural resources of the earth are under increasing pressure, particularly in tropical countries as world population continues to grow".
Economic, social, institutional and environmental issues need to be addressed together to achieve development that does not jeopardize the right of future generations to enjoy these resources. Agroforestry systems (AFS), wherein different plant species, including perennials, are cultivated together in the same field, can play an important role in sustainable development. |
These systems have the potential to achieve a higher efficiency than monocultures in terms of productivity and sustainable use of natural resources. However, because of their complexity and variability in composition of species mixtures, management regimes, agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions, and other factors, research has to be long-term and multidisciplinary in order to generate relevant results and be able to translate them (with the help and support of other actors) in improved technologies, practices and eventually innovations for farmers.” (PCP AFS-PC first scientific framework).
